Energy Assistance encompasses two areas, Low-Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP) and Weatherization, a program designed to aid low-income families by reducing home energy costs. Weatherization work is done on the homes of qualified, low-income families. It includes insulating attics, weather-stripping, repairing and replacing heating systems, caulking, installing storm windows and making other minor repairs. These improvements are engineered to increase energy efficiency, thereby reducing the energy needed to heat and cool homes. LIHEAP is designed to assist low income households pay for part of their winter energy costs. LlHEAP provides a one-time annual benefit to the households to be used for energy bills. The amount of the payment is determined by income, size of the family, fuel type and geographic location. This payment may be made in the form of a credit on the client's bill, or in some instances as direct assistance to help them reconnect to the energy provider. |
